Bible Verses Given to Me: A Memoir
Mamie Smith on August 2, 2013
Bible Verses Given To Me: A Memoir, is a book of just that … Bible verses.  The author, Dr. JoAnn Baldwin  believes that these verses were given to her by God for the purpose of giving the world a deeper explanation and understanding of the Trinity, which is traditionally thought of as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost … three persons in One.  JoAnn says, The name of God is Jesus” and Jesus is the Father, represented as “Thought, Word is the Son and deed is the Holy Spirit.”
According to her, God decided to “put on flesh and come to earth–known as incarnation” and after his work was finished as the human man Jesus,  God, Jesus , then … “went back to the eternal part of himself, his thoughts” and now is in the role of God.
Whether you agree or not, it is an interesting book to read.
Currently, Dr. Baldwin is the Pastor of Kosciusko AME Church in Mississippi.  She is also Associate Professor of English and Director of the Writing Center at Mississippi Valley State University.  You may purchase her book at this link.

A Beautiful Rose named MetaJuly 10, 2013
By Camille Mitchell (Detroit,MI)
This review is from: The Unfolding of a Rose(Hardcover)

Dr. Mamie Smith has written a powerful book about grieving and healing. “Unfolding Of A Rose” is a touching memoir of a mother’s special relationship and love for her daughter.

During the grieving process; Mamie Smith comes to an understanding of why Meta’s illness and subsequent passing “seeded” a fuller more profound meaning of what life is. Reflecting upon all of the wonderful memories that are continuously “Unfolding” after Meta’s transition; Mamie’s beautiful memoir is appreciated by friends who have lost love ones.

The Smith Family’s early years are a constant reminder of the importance of family and instills a positive role model of a strong committed African American family that every family can gain valuable lessons from.

This review is from: The Unfolding of a Rose (Hardcover)

“The Unfolding of a Rose” initially developed much like an autobiography but then metamorphosed into a paean to the author’s daughter, Meta Rose, who demonstrated uncommon courage, grace and dignity as she struggled with the ravages of cancer that were exacerbated by ill-advised medical procedures. The book appeared to be a cathartic necessity to enable the author to reconcile the loss of her daughter with the notion that her faith was sufficient to save her. While the author’s faith seemed to have been challenged, her faith prevailed as she remembers her one and only daughter, her beautiful Rose, who grew and left her fragrant impressions upon all those who met her. Reading this book had a profound and personal impact on me and was an enjoyable read.

A Story of Warmth and Love August 4, 2008
Format:Paperback

Mamie L. Smth’s “The Unfolding of a Rose” is the touching story of a mother’s faith that helped her through the death of her daughter.

The author is the mother of a special, brave woman, who succumbed to breast cancer. The story begins with the early years of her young family, as they traveled across America, German, and Japan as a military family. The author’s daughter, Meta was an inquisitive child, and she excelled in school. Her life was made complete when she married and had two adorable children. Meta had an entrepreneurial spirit, and decided to go into business for herself. Despite hard economic times, she was able to pool her resources in the best interests of her business. Her exciting life came to an abrupt stop when she discovered she had breast cancer.

Meta’s mother experimented with various religions, looking for an alternative to her husband’s Catholic faith. A chance knock at her door by a Christian Scientist, put the wheels in motion that would make her a devoted follower of Mary Baker Eddy and her philosophies. The more she studied Christian Science, the more she saw that its doctrines surpassed conventional medical assumptions. When Meta’s cancer was discovered, her strong faith carried both of them through many dark days. Thinking back on her daughter’s life she writes, ” I see her as planted by divine mind, nurtured by spirit, and yielding the fruits of love. She is not a rose that comes into being, lets its beauty and fragrance shine for only a moment, and then passes away, but an ever unfolding rose, whose petals dance among us, never to disappear from our lives.”

This is a poignant and heart-warming autobiography, and Mamie L. Smith’s strong faith in Christian Science runs like a golden thread through the narrative. The author portrays her daughter as a strong, determined, and caring person that she was, and the bond between them should touch the reader’s heart. The engrossing story told in “The Unfolding of a Rose” should resonate with the reader long after the last page is turned.

This review is from: Our Lady of Victory: The Saga of an African-American Catholic Community (Paperback)

It was a time of prosperity . . . and the little church community was no exception. Businesses were popping us, racial walls were coming down, and the little church on Eight Mile Road in Detroit, Michigan planted its roots. “Our Lady of Victory,” in the words of author Shirley Slaughter, “left a legacy to be proud of . . . .”

This African-American Catholic Church, was founded in 1943 when the community in which it stood, was “reeling from the effects of the worst race riot in Detroit’s history.” In relating its history, Slaughter takes the reader through her personal experiences as it waged its war on racism and survival . . . and at the same time trying to preserve its identity and traditions. She is soulful and heart-warming as she shares what led her family to become Catholic, but direct in laying out the policies that stifled growth of the little church, and eventually led to its demise. Not only is the story told in prose, it is amplified in pictures that speak louder than words.

You will marvel at its strength, cheer its message and applaud its courage. Why? Not only was it a victory then, but . . . it is a victory now. It no longer stands on eight mile, but it is stamped on the hearts and minds of those who lived it . . . and more importantly, in the discovery of those who can read about it now.

If you don’t have a copy . . . get one, and share in the victory of . . . “Our Lady.” Mamie Smith Ed.D.

Mamie Smith’s narration beautifully explores the emotional territories of the heart put to the ultimate test and her astounding courage to accept God’s plan. Exceptionally Well Written
By Shirley Slaughter
Format:Hardcover

I bought this book from the author and it was not what I was expecting. I loved the fact that Mamie got into her personal story which was fascinating. I felt like I was transported to her life as she traveled the world with her husband and children. Then she talked about her daughter who died from cancer and the grief she went through trying to come to terms with this untimely loss. This daughter who was a businesswoman and a people-person opened a store in downtown Detroit. Meta was smart and beautiful, and her light shone on everyone who crossed her path. And so I felt Mamie’s pain when Meta was taken away from her so early. But what I really admired was the strength Mamie got from her inner faith through this tragedy. Its really hard to forgive the negligence she believed caused Meta’s death but she finds a way to work through the anger and grief. I got upset just reading about it. This book gives examples of how to handle this and any other kind of tragedy. Mamie shares her story to help others get through it. That’s what makes this book so useful and delightful. You can refer back to it anytime you need to.

Mamie, thank you for sharing yourself with us.

Format: Hardcopy
The Unfolding of a Rose was a guide for me to see how to handle everyday challenges with just an understanding of God and a realization that changes in life comes with a change in one’s thinking. With me being in my twenties, like most 20-somethings, I have been battling with where life was taking me and what path I was meant to follow. While reading this book, I discovered that even with challenges in life, you must remain optimistic at all times. And in those times of question, turn to God for guidance and he will direct. I recommend this book to everyone, from the college student battling with school, to the parent that has lost a child (or even the child that has lost a parent), and everyone in between. With my loss of a parent, it was definitely a guide for me to finally find some closure in my life. Thanks Dr. Smith!!! and KEEP WRITING.
